On Aug. 8, 2025, the Akira ransomware group posted on the dark web claiming responsibility for the attack and stated they had obtained more than 42 GB of sensitive organizational data.
The breach potentially affected both employees and customers, with the hackers claiming the exposed information includes financial records such as audits, payment details, financial reports and invoices, as well as employee and customer data like emails, medical records, confidential documents and non-disclosure agreements (NDAs). The attackers threatened to publish the stolen data, increasing the risk of misuse.
Wytech Industries disclosed the incident to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Aug. 29, 2025, confirming the scope of the breach and the types of information involved. The data breach was also reported to the Massachusetts Attorney General's office on Oct. 15, 2025. Wytech also began mailing data breach notices to affected individuals on Oct. 15, 2025.
The Akira ransomware group is known for targeting organizations and threatening to leak sensitive data if their demands are not met. The breach is particularly severe due to the exposure of financial documents and medical records, which can be used for identity theft, fraud or other malicious purposes.
After discovering the breach, Wytech Industries took steps to investigate and contain the incident. They promptly notified the SEC and began working with cybersecurity professionals to assess the impact and secure their systems. The company is also offering affected individuals 24 months of free TransUnion Cyberscout single-bureau credit monitoring services.
