Freeway Insurance, an insurance broker and distributor founded in 1987 and headquartered in Huntington Beach, California, disclosed a data breach involving the unauthorized acquisition of files containing sensitive personal information.

The breach was disclosed to the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation on Aug. 4, 2026.

The company began sending notifications to affected individuals after completing a data review in June 2026. The total number of individuals affected nationwide remains undisclosed.

On March 31, 2026, Freeway Insurance received a report of potential unauthorized activity involving some of its data. The company began working with third-party cybersecurity experts to investigate the situation.

After identifying the impacted files, Freeway Insurance engaged a separate data-review firm to conduct a detailed analysis of their contents. The data-review results were delivered to Freeway Insurance in June 2026.

The types of personal information that may have been exposed include credit and debit card numbers, driver's license numbers, financial account information and Social Security numbers.

Freeway Insurance's response to the breach

Freeway Insurance is offering affected individuals a complimentary 12-month membership in identity theft protection services. Details on how to enroll in the identity theft protection services were included in the notification letters sent to affected individuals.

The notification urged recipients to remain vigilant and watch for any signs of unauthorized financial activity on their accounts. Freeway Insurance provided contact information for the three major credit reporting agencies so that affected individuals can monitor and protect their credit.

Additionally, the company directed affected individuals to the Federal Trade Commission at 877-438-4338 for information about fraud alerts, security freezes and other consumer protection tools.
