Virginia Transportation Corp., a nationwide automobile carrier and logistics provider headquartered in West Warwick, Rhode Island, has disclosed a data breach that was first detected in September 2025. Founded in 1994, the company specializes in vehicle transportation and auto hauling for major automobile manufacturers, car dealerships and automotive auctions across the United States.
On or about Sept. 16, 2025, Virginia Transportation became aware of unauthorized activity on its computer network. An investigation found that an unauthorized party accessed the company's network on or about that same date and that files stored on the network were likely copied during the intrusion.
The process of reviewing what personal information was contained in the affected files took several additional months. On July 6, 2026, nearly 10 months after the breach was first detected, the company completed its comprehensive review and confirmed that personal information within those files had been compromised.
The breach exposed personally identifiable information (PII) including full names, financial information, taxpayer identification numbers, dates of birth, driver's license or state identification numbers, passport numbers, social insurance numbers and Social Security numbers.
The breach also involved protected health information (PHI), including health insurance information and medical information.
So far, the breach has impacted 268 Rhode Island residents, 119 Massachusetts residents and two Vermont residents. The company also posted a substitute notice on its website.
Virginia Transportation is offering complimentary identity monitoring services through Kroll.
Affected individuals who received a notification letter can activate their monitoring by visiting the Kroll enrollment page and entering the membership number included in their letter. Additional details about the identity monitoring services are available on Kroll's information page.
Virginia Transportation Corp. has also established a dedicated toll-free response line at 844-858-8919 for individuals who have questions about the incident or need to determine whether they are affected and eligible for credit monitoring.
