Redtail Technology Inc., a cloud-based customer relationship management provider for financial advisors, disclosed a data breach that occurred in May 2026.

Redtail serves as a service provider to J.W. Cole Advisors Inc., a financial advisory firm, and the breach affected information belonging to J.W. Cole Advisors' clients.

The breach was disclosed to the New Hampshire Attorney General on July 6, 2026. Consumer notification letters were mailed on the same date on behalf of J.W. Cole Advisors.

On May 13, 2026, an unauthorized third party carried out a social engineering attack against a Redtail Technology employee. The threat actor gained temporary access to a subset of data and cloud platforms that Redtail uses to manage and support its customer relationships.

Once inside the systems, the unauthorized actor exfiltrated data from those platforms. Redtail's security systems detected the event and contained the threat. The unauthorized actor was removed from Redtail's systems early in the day on May 14, 2026.

Redtail then worked with legal counsel and a leading third-party cybersecurity investigator to understand the nature and scope of the incident. The review included identifying what personal information was potentially accessed and determining which individuals were affected.

The types of personal information exposed included names, Social Security numbers and account numbers.

Redtail Technology's response to the breach

On June 8, 2026, Redtail notified J.W. Cole Advisors Inc., the affected business customer and data owner, about the potential involvement of personal information collected through them. Since then, Redtail and J.W. Cole Advisors have worked together to facilitate appropriate notifications to affected individuals and regulators.

Affected individuals are being offered 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring and identity theft protection through Experian IdentityWorks.
