Safetyfirst Systems Data Breach Exposes Social Security Numbers

Safetyfirst Systems LLC, a New Jersey-based driver and fleet safety company that provides compliance and Motor Vehicle Records services to businesses, disclosed a data breach that may have exposed sensitive personal information.

On Jan. 19, 2026, a log review revealed suspicious activity involving a limited portion of the company's server environment, according to the company's notification to consumers. Safetyfirst Systems took steps to secure its systems and brought in third-party forensic specialists to investigate.

The forensic investigation determined that an unauthorized actor had access to a limited portion of the company's systems between Jan. 16, 2026, and Jan. 19, 2026. During that window, the unauthorized actor accessed or possibly acquired certain files from the company's systems. Safetyfirst Systems then conducted a thorough review of the affected files to identify what information was involved and which individuals were affected.

The types of personal information exposed included names, Social Security numbers and driver's license numbers. The specific types of information affected vary from person to person, according to the company's notice.

Because Safetyfirst Systems provides driver and employee compliance and Motor Vehicle Records services to businesses, the affected individuals are people whose personal information the company maintained as part of those services. The company's notification letter confirmed that it handles driver and employee compliance and Motor Vehicle Records data on behalf of its business clients.

The breach was reported to attorneys general in Texas and California on July 23, 2026. The company posted a notice on its website with details about the incident and steps people can take to protect their information.

The breach affected 4,504 residents in Texas and 364 residents in Rhode Island, according to state regulatory filings and the company's notice.

Safetyfirst Systems' response

Safetyfirst Systems is notifying potentially affected individuals by U.S. mail and through a posting on its website. The company stated it is also notifying appropriate regulatory authorities as required.

Given that Social Security numbers and driver's license numbers were among the information exposed, Safetyfirst Systems is offering affected individuals free credit monitoring services through Cyberscout, a TransUnion company. The services include single bureau credit monitoring, a credit report and a credit score through TransUnion. These services alert individuals when changes occur to their credit file. The company is also providing proactive fraud assistance through Cyberscout to help with questions or in the event someone becomes a victim of fraud.

To enroll in the free monitoring services, affected individuals can visit the Cyberscout enrollment page and enter the unique code provided in their notification letter. Enrollment must be completed within 90 days of the date of the letter.

Individuals with questions can call the company's dedicated assistance line at 1-833-289-5523 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Eastern time, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.
