Your Rights and Next Steps
If you received a notice about this data breach, there are important steps you can take to protect yourself. First, consider enrolling in the complimentary credit monitoring and identity restoration services being offered. These services can alert you to suspicious activity and help restore your identity if you become a victim of identity theft.
You should also review your account statements and credit reports for any unusual activity. Under federal law, you are entitled to one free credit report each year from each of the three major credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. If you notice any errors or signs of fraud, report them immediately to your bank or credit card company.
Additionally, you have the right to place a fraud alert or credit freeze on your credit file at no cost. A fraud alert requires businesses to verify your identity before issuing new credit in your name. A credit freeze restricts access to your credit report, making it harder for identity thieves to open accounts in your name.
If you believe you are a victim of identity theft, you can file a police report and contact your state attorney general or the Federal Trade Commission for further guidance.
