On Jan. 11, 2025, through Jan. 15, 2025, Premier Auto Credit, a financial services company specializing in alternative auto financing, experienced a significant data breach. The incident involved unauthorized access to the company’s network, later confirmed to be the work of the Cloak ransomware group.
The breach was first hinted at on Jan. 19, 2025, when Cloak posted a masked reference to the company on its dark web portal. By Jan. 30, the group revealed Premier Auto Credit’s full domain name, released sample screenshots, and made 156 GB of compromised data available for download on their site hosted on the Tor network. This indicates a ransomware attack where not only was data encrypted but also exfiltrated and leaked.
The types of information exposed in this incident include full names and Social Security numbers; both highly sensitive pieces of personally identifiable information (PII). The exposure of sensitive PII puts individuals at risk of identity theft and financial fraud. So far, the breach has impacted a limited number of individuals in Massachusetts and an unknown number in California. However, the investigation is ongoing and the number of impacted individuals is subject to change.
Impacted individuals were notified after the review concluded on Dec. 10, 2025. On Dec. 23, 2025, Premier Auto Credit disclosed the data breach to the Attorney General's offices in Massachusetts and California.
Upon discovering unusual activity, Premier Auto Credit promptly secured its systems and began a thorough investigation with the help of external cybersecurity experts. The company conducted a forensic investigation and manual document review to determine the scope of the breach. To support those affected, Premier Auto Credit is offering a complimentary credit monitoring service through Cyberscout, a TransUnion company.
