University of Tennessee Medical Center Privacy Settlement

Patients of University Health Systems Inc., doing business as The University of Tennessee Medical Center, who had a patient portal account between Jan. 1, 2015, and Sept. 30, 2023, may be eligible to claim $25 from a class action settlement.

University Health Systems Inc. agreed to settle a class action lawsuit alleging it disclosed confidential personally identifiable information and/or protected health information to third-party technology companies without patient consent.

Who is eligible file a claim?

Class members must meet all of the following criteria:

• They are or have been a patient of University of Tennessee Medical Center.
• They reside in the United States.
• They had a UTMC patient portal account at any time between Jan. 1, 2015, and Sept. 30, 2023.

How much can class members get?

Class members who submit a valid claim form can receive a fixed cash payment of $25. In addition, all class members received a code and instructions at the top of their settlement notice to enroll in the Privacy Shield Pro product, which offers privacy protection services.

How to claim a class action rebate

Class members can complete the online claim form or download, print, fill out and mail the PDF claim form to the settlement administrator. The claim deadline is Dec. 9, 2025.

Information required

All class members must provide the class member login ID and password located on the settlement notice they received. Those who are unable to locate their ID and PIN should contact the settlement administrator by emailing info@UTMCSettlement.com or calling 833-417-4897 and providing their full name and mailing address.

Settlement fund breakdown

The settlement fund includes:

• Settlement administration costs: To be determined
• Attorneys' fees, costs and expenses: Up to $1,000,000
• Service award to class representative: $3,500
• Privacy Shield Pro product: Provided to all class members
• Payments to eligible class members: $25 per approved claim

When is the University Health Systems Inc. settlement payout date?

The settlement administrator will issue payments to eligible class members approximately 30 days after it resolves all appeals and the court grants final approval to the settlement.

The class action lawsuit alleged the University of Tennessee Medical Center disclosed patients' confidential information to third-party technology companies without consent.

UTMC denies all allegations. The parties agreed to settle to avoid the expense and uncertainty of ongoing litigation.
