Your Rights and Next Steps
If you received a notification from Venezia Bulk Transport, Inc. about this data breach, there are several important steps to consider.
First, the company is offering complimentary credit monitoring and fraud assistance services through Cyberscout, a TransUnion company. These services can alert you to changes in your credit file and provide support if you become a victim of fraud.
In addition to enrolling in credit monitoring, you can take further action to protect yourself:
- Place a fraud alert on your credit files with one of the three major credit bureaus. This tells creditors to verify your identity before opening new accounts.
- Consider placing a security freeze on your credit report. This prevents new credit from being issued in your name without your authorization.
- Obtain free copies of your credit reports from each of the major credit bureaus and review them for suspicious activity or errors.
- Stay vigilant by regularly checking your financial statements and credit reports for any irregularities.
- If you believe your medical information was compromised, review your insurance statements for unfamiliar charges and contact your provider if you notice anything unusual.
If you notice any signs of identity theft or fraud, report the incident to your local law enforcement and file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. State-specific resources are also available for additional guidance.
