On Jan. 9, 2026, Venezia Bulk Transport Inc., a Pennsylvania-based trucking and bulk transport company, determined that it had experienced a data breach affecting 6,987 individuals in the United States, including one Maine resident.
On Sept. 11, 2025, the Akira ransomware group claimed responsibility for the attack on Venezia’s network, posting about the incident on the dark web. They stated that they had stolen 35GB of sensitive corporate data.
The compromised information includes personally identifiable information (PII) such as names, dates of birth, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, medical certificates, passports, driver licenses, and other employee records. Financial and accounting files, payment details, client information, project information, and nondisclosure agreements (NDAs) were also exposed.
According to the company’s disclosure to the Maine Attorney General, the unauthorized access began on or about Aug. 5, 2025. The attackers infiltrated the company’s network and exfiltrated sensitive files before deploying ransomware.
The breach was not discovered until a thorough forensic investigation and manual document review were completed in January 2026.
Upon learning of the breach, Venezia Bulk Transport secured its network and began working with external cybersecurity professionals to investigate the incident.
The company has notified all affected individuals in writing as of Jan. 22, 2026, and is offering complimentary single-bureau credit monitoring, credit reports, and credit score services through Cyberscout, a TransUnion company. These services are available for several months from the date of enrollment and include proactive fraud assistance.
Venezia recommends that affected individuals remain vigilant by reviewing their financial account statements and credit reports regularly for any signs of fraudulent activity. The company also encourages placing a fraud alert or security freeze on credit files and provides detailed instructions for doing so.
Those who may be concerned about medical identity theft are advised to review their health insurance statements and contact their providers for clarification on any unfamiliar charges.
