The settlement administrator began issuing payments in the amount of $394.36 to approved claimants on Feb. 2, 2026.
Individuals who received a Cash App referral text message while living in Washington state between Nov. 14, 2019, and Aug. 7, 2025, that they did not clearly and affirmatively consent to receive such messages, qualified to submit a claim for this class action settlement.
Block Inc., the company behind Cash App, paid $12.5 million to settle a lawsuit alleging it assisted users in sending unsolicited commercial text messages to Washington residents through the Cash App Invite Friends referral program. The plaintiff claimed Block violated Washington’s Commercial Electronic Mail Act (CEMA) and the Washington Consumer Protection Act (CPA) by enabling these messages without recipients’ clear and affirmative consent.

Why did this class action settlement happen?
The class action lawsuit was filed because Block Inc. was accused of violating Washington state law by assisting its users in sending unsolicited commercial text messages through the Cash App Invite Friends referral program. The plaintiff alleged that Block incentivized users to send pre-filled text messages to their contacts without first obtaining clear and affirmative consent from the recipients.
The class action claimed violations of the Washington Commercial Electronic Mail Act and the Washington Consumer Protection Act. Block denied any wrongdoing, but agreed to settle to avoid the cost and uncertainty of further litigation and a possible trial.
