VITAS Hospice Services employs more than 12,000 professionals and serves an average daily census of over 22,000 patients. The organization delivers a range of hospice and palliative care services, including routine and inpatient care, 24/7 telecare support, and medical equipment delivery. Each patient is supported by an interdisciplinary care team that may include physicians, nurses, aides, social workers, chaplains, volunteers and bereavement specialists.

What Happened?

On Oct. 24, 2025, VITAS Hospice Services discovered that an unauthorized party had compromised the account of one of its vendors, gaining access to some of the company’s systems. The investigation revealed that this unauthorized access occurred between Sept. 21 and Oct. 27, 2025.

During this period, the intruder was able to access and download personal information about some patients and former patients.

The data breach was disclosed to the California and Texas Attorney Generals' offices on or prior to Nov. 21, 2025, and to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on Nov. 24, 2025. So far, the cybersecurity incident has impacted at least 319,177 individuals, including 5,633 residents in Texas. This is an ongoing investigation, and the number of affected individuals is subject to change.
