What Happened?

On March 3, 2025, the Counseling Center of Wayne and Holmes Counties discovered suspicious activity on its systems after a disruption was reported by a third-party service provider.

An internal investigation revealed that an unauthorized entity likely gained access to one of the center’s servers on March 2, 2025, and took information from the system the next day. The center acted to contain the incident, reset account credentials, and engaged cybersecurity professionals to investigate.

The center completed its analysis of impacted data on Dec. 9, 2025, and began notifying affected individuals by written notice on Feb. 9, 2026. The attorney general office of Maine was notified.

The investigation found that the following types of consumer information may have been exposed:

  • Names
  • Dates of birth
  • Social Security numbers
  • Driver’s license or state identification numbers
  • Financial accounts
  • Health insurance information
  • Medical condition information
  • Treatment provider names
  • Medical record numbers
  • Treatment cost information
  • Diagnosis and/or treatment information

The data breach affected approximately 83,354 individuals in the United States, including two residents of Maine.
