T-Mobile, a major American wireless telecommunications company, disclosed a data breach that has affected so at least one individual residing in Maine.

The breach was disclosed to the Maine Attorney General in a filing dated March 31, 2026. T-Mobile discovered the breach on March 5, 2026, and is notifying the affected consumer on March 31, 2026, by written notice.

What happened in the T-Mobile data breach

T-Mobile's internal monitoring systems detected that an unauthorized individual gained access to limited information associated with a customer's account.

T-Mobile confirmed that personal financial account information and call records were not compromised in the incident.

The exposed information included full name, address, email address, account number, associated phone numbers, T-Mobile account PIN, driver's license number, date of birth and Social Security number.

T-Mobile's response to the breach

Affected individuals received a unique activation code in their notification letter and must complete enrollment by June 30, 2026, to activate the complimentary service.

T-Mobile recommended affected consumers take additional steps to strengthen their account security. The company suggested reviewing all account information and updating any security questions and answers associated with the account.

T-Mobile also urged affected consumers to remain vigilant in monitoring for any potentially unauthorized credit activity associated with their identity.

For questions about their T-Mobile account, affected individuals can reach Customer Care by dialing 611 from their T-Mobile phone or by calling 1-800-937-8997 from any phone.

Steps to take if your information was exposed

  • Place a fraud alert with one of the three major credit bureaus, which will then notify the other two on the consumer's behalf: Experian at 1-888-397-3742, Equifax at 1-800-525-6285 or TransUnion at 1-800-680-7289.
  • Consider placing a credit freeze with all three credit bureaus to prevent new accounts from being opened using stolen personal information such as Social Security numbers or driver's license numbers.
  • Request free credit reports at AnnualCreditReport.com and review them carefully for any unfamiliar accounts, inquiries or other unexpected changes.
  • Monitor financial accounts and statements closely for unauthorized transactions or suspicious activity, given the sensitive nature of the information involved in this breach.
  • Be cautious of phishing attempts that reference T-Mobile or this data breach by name in emails, text messages or phone calls, as scammers often exploit breach notifications to trick people into sharing more personal information.
  • Report suspected identity theft to the FTC at 1-877-438-4338 or to local law enforcement if any suspicious activity is detected.
