On March 14, 2025, The Lincoln National Life Insurance Company discovered a data breach that affected 8,848 individuals in the United States. The breach was traced to Kelly Benefits, a third-party provider of benefits administration and payroll solutions used by employers offering Lincoln insurance products.
Between December 12 and December 17, 2024, unauthorized access occurred on Kelly Benefits’ servers, resulting in the theft of files containing sensitive personal information.
The exposed data includes a combination of personally identifiable information (PII) such as names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, and financial account details. In some cases, protected health information (PHI), including medical records, was also compromised.
The breach affected 15 people in Maine and 83 in Massachusetts, with the remainder spread across other states.
You can review the official disclosures on the Maine Attorney General’s portal and the Massachusetts Attorney General’s website. Written notifications were sent to affected consumers on April 30, 2025.
After learning of the breach, Lincoln Financial worked with Kelly Benefits to investigate the incident and determine the scope of the compromised information. Kelly Benefits began reviewing its security policies and procedures to prevent future incidents.
To help affected individuals protect themselves, Lincoln Financial arranged complimentary identity monitoring services through Kroll for a specified period. This service includes triple bureau credit monitoring, fraud consultation, and identity theft restoration support.
If you received a notification, it is important to activate your free identity monitoring service as soon as possible. Additionally, you should remain vigilant by regularly reviewing your account statements and credit reports for unauthorized activity. You can obtain a free credit report annually from each of the three nationwide credit reporting agencies. Consider placing a fraud alert or a security freeze on your credit file for added protection.
Further details about the available resources and steps you can take are provided in the written notice sent to affected consumers. If you have questions or need assistance, you can contact Kroll using the information in your notification letter.
