
Consumers who received notice that their personal information may have been impacted by the September 2020 Sturm, Ruger & Co. and Freestyle Software Inc. data incident or who believe their information affected may be eligible to claim up to $4,500 from a class action settlement.
Sturm, Ruger & Co. Inc. and Freestyle Software Inc. agreed to pay $1.5 million to settle a class action lawsuit alleging the companies failed to implement reasonable security measures, resulting in a data breach that exposed sensitive customer information, including names, addresses and payment details.
Who can file a Sturm, Ruger & Co. claim?
Class members must meet the following criteria:
- Sturm, Ruger & Co. Inc. sent them a notice stating their personal information may have been impacted by the Freestyle Software Inc. data incident or
- Their personal information was otherwise impacted or exfiltrated by the data incident even if they did not receive a direct notice.
How much can class members receive?
- Reimbursement for out-of-pocket losses: Up to $4,500 for documented losses related to the data incident. Eligible expenses include unreimbursed losses from fraud or identity theft, professional fees (such as attorneys’ or accountants’ fees), costs to freeze or unfreeze credit, credit monitoring expenses incurred after the incident and miscellaneous expenses like postage or notary fees.
- Compensation for lost time: Up to five hours at $25 per hour (maximum $125) and subject to the $4,500 cap.
- Pro rata cash payment: A base payment of $50, which may increase up to $175 depending on the number of approved claims.
If the total value of claims exceeds the net settlement fund, individual payments will be reduced proportionally.
How to claim a data breach payment
Class members can file a claim online or download, print and complete a PDF claim form at the same link and mail it to the settlement administrator. The deadline to submit a claim form is Oct. 27, 2025.

What proof or documentation is necessary to submit a claim?
- To file an online claim, class members must provide the claim ID and PIN from their settlement notice.
- For out-of-pocket losses, class members must provide documentation to show the loss is related to the data incident.
- For lost time and pro rata cash payment claims, class members need only select the appropriate option.

When is the Ruger and Freestyle data breach settlement payout date?
