On May 20, 2025, Lawyers’ Mutual Insurance Company of California, a provider of professional liability insurance for California attorneys, experienced a major cybersecurity breach. An investigation revealed that a threat actor gained access to and may have acquired files containing sensitive consumer information.

The company discovered that personally identifiable information (PII) may have been taken from its computer network on Oct. 9, 2025. An investigation concluded on or around Nov. 3, 2025, which determined that the breach may have affected more than 6,747 individuals across the U.S. The cyber security incident was disclosed to the California and Maine Attorney Generals' offices on Nov. 14, 2025.

The cybersecurity breach may have exposed sensitive information, including names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, dates of birth and Social Security numbers.

Lawyers’ Mutual's response

In response to the breach, Lawyers’ Mutual Insurance Company of California engaged cybersecurity professionals to investigate the incident and took steps to contain the unauthorized activity. The company also notified law enforcement about the breach. The company has also notified affected individuals and is offering offering complimentary 12 to 24-month credit monitoring and identity theft protection though IDX.
