On September 30, 2024, Hunter Health Clinic discovered a data breach that affected the personal and health information of tens of thousands of individuals between September 27 and September 30, 2024. During this time, an unknown party gained access to sensitive data stored by the clinic.

The breach impacted a total of 31,778 people in the United States, including 5 residents of Maine and 2 residents of Massachusetts.

The exposed information included a wide range of personally identifiable information (PII) and protected health information (PHI): full names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, driver’s license, state identification and other government identification numbers, financial account information, medical and clinical information, patient account numbers, and health insurance information.

This combination of PII and PHI increases the risk of identity theft and medical fraud for those affected.

The breach was reported to the Maine Attorney General’s office on May 16, 2025, to the Massachusetts Attorney General’s office on May 15, 2025, and posted a notice about the incident on its own website.

Hunter Health Clinic's response

After discovering the breach, Hunter Health Clinic promptly began an investigation to determine the scope and impact of the incident. The clinic notified affected individuals by written notice on May 15, 2025. While the specific technical details of how the breach occurred have not been disclosed, the range of information accessed suggests a serious compromise of internal systems.

If you believe you may have been affected, it is important to remain vigilant. Monitor your financial accounts and credit reports for any unauthorized activity. Consider placing a fraud alert or credit freeze with the major credit bureaus. Since both PII and PHI were exposed, be cautious of any suspicious communications that may attempt to use your information for phishing or fraud.

If you received a notification letter, follow the instructions provided to protect your information. If you have questions, you may contact the clinic directly for further guidance.
