HSHS Data Breach Affects Two Thousand Texans, Exposing Social Security Numbers

On August 27, 2023, Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS) discovered that an unauthorized third party had gained access to its network. This breach affected a significant number of individuals, with 2,005 people impacted in Texas and 85 in Massachusetts, as reported to the respective Attorney General's offices.

The unauthorized access occurred between August 16 and August 27, 2023. During this period, certain files on HSHS’s network were accessed, potentially exposing sensitive personal information.

The types of consumer information exposed include:

  • Names
  • Addresses
  • Social Security Numbers
  • Driver’s License Numbers
  • Medical Information
  • Health Insurance Information

Hospital Sisters Health System's Response

Upon discovering the breach, HSHS took immediate action to contain and remediate the incident. They launched an internal investigation and engaged a leading forensic security firm to assist in confirming the security of their systems. HSHS also reported the incident to law enforcement.

To further protect affected individuals, HSHS is offering a complimentary two-year membership to Experian IdentityWorksSM Credit 3B. This service provides identity protection, monitoring, and support in case of identity theft.
