Why is there a class action settlement?

The lawsuit alleged Penn Medicine disclosed patients’ personally identifiable information to third parties such as Meta (Facebook) and Google through tracking pixels and analytics tools on its website without obtaining patient consent. The plaintiffs claimed this violated the Pennsylvania Wiretapping and Electronic Surveillance Control Act.

Penn Medicine denied wrongdoing but agreed to settle to avoid the expense and uncertainties of litigation. The settlement also includes changes to Penn Medicine’s use of tracking technologies on its website for at least two years.
