Individuals who received prerecorded calls on their cell phone from Tax Relief Helpers between June 21, 2021, and the present may be eligible to claim an estimated $120 from a class action settlement.

Tax Relief Helpers Inc. agreed to pay $2.95 million to resolve a class action lawsuit alleging violations of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. The lawsuit claimed Tax Relief Helpers made prerecorded calls to cell phones without proper consent and repeated calls to numbers listed on the National Do Not Call Registry or its own internal do-not-call list.

Who can file a claim?

Class members must meet the following criteria:

  • They received a call from Tax Relief Helpers Inc. or its agents at any time from June 21, 2021, through the present.
  • Tax Relief Helpers made the call using an artificial or prerecorded voice without prior express written consent OR
  • They received more than one call within a 12-month period to a number registered on the National Do Not Call Registry or Tax Relief Helpers’ internal do-not-call list.

Additional details:

  • An individual may have received a postcard notification from the settlement administrator if their cell phone number appeared in the calling records obtained for this case.
    • Those who did not receive a postcard notification but whose cell phone numbers appear in the calling records may still be eligible to participate.

How much can class members get?

Each approved claimant will receive an estimated $120. However, the settlement administrator may reduce this amount depending on the total number of valid claims, as well as deductions for administrative expenses, attorneys' fees and service awards. The total payout to class members, plus these deductions, cannot exceed the $2.95 million settlement cap.

Why is there a class action settlement?

The class lawsuit alleges Tax Relief Helpers Inc. violated the Telephone Consumer Protection Act by making prerecorded calls to cell phones without prior express written consent and repeated calls to numbers on the National Do Not Call Registry or its internal list.

Tax Relief Helpers denies the allegations but agreed to settle to avoid the costs and uncertainty of litigation. The settlement allows affected individuals to receive compensation without further legal action.
