Seattle Housing Authority agreed to pay to settle a class action lawsuit alleging it failed to protect personal information during a October 2023 cyberattack.

Who can file a Seattle Housing Authority claim?

Class members are U.S. residents whose personal information the October 2023 Seattle Housing Authority data breach may have compromised.

They must also must have received a notice by postcard or email indicating their information was involved in the breach. Those who believe they are eligible but did not receive a notice should contact the settlement administrator at 1-844-405-6502 to verify their status.

How much can class members get?

  • Reimbursement for out-of-pocket losses: Up to $5,000 for documented, unreimbursed expenses traceable to the data breach, such as:
    • Losses from fraud or identity theft
    • Professional fees (attorneys, accountants, credit repair, etc.)
    • Costs to freeze or unfreeze credit after Aug. 9, 2023
    • Credit monitoring costs incurred after Aug. 9, 2023
    • Miscellaneous expenses (notary, postage, copying, mileage, etc.)

This includes reimbursement for up to four hours of lost time at $25 per hour (maximum $100).

  • Alternative cash payment: Instead of claiming out-of-pocket losses or lost time, class members may select a flat cash payment (maximum $100). The final amount depends on the number of valid claims and available funds.

If the total amount of valid claims exceeds the settlement fund, the settlement administrator will reduce payments proportionally (pro rata). If there are funds remaining after the initial payments, the settlement administrator will distribute them among valid claimants.

How to claim a data breach payout

Class members can file an online claim form or download, print, complete and mail the PDF claim form to the settlement administrator. The claim deadline is Nov. 19, 2025.

Required documentation and information

  • To file an online claim, class members must enter the settlement claim ID located on their settlement notice. Those who do not have an ID or misplaced it should contact the settlement administrator at 1-844-405-6502 to request it.
  • For out-of-pocket loss claims, class members must provide documentation, such as receipts or third-party records.
  • For attested time claims, class members must provide a brief description of the time spent.
  • For alternative cash payment claims, class members need only select the appropriate option.

The class action lawsuit alleged a cyberattack on Seattle Housing Authority in October 2023 allowed cybercriminals to access or acquire files containing personal information. The plaintiffs claimed SHA failed to adequately protect this information.
