What Happened?

On Aug. 14, 2025, Marquis Software Solutions, a third-party provider of Norway Savings Bank, discovered a ransomware attack in which an unauthorized external actor gained access to certain portions of its data environment. This incident did not involve Norway Savings Bank’s internal systems, but it did impact data Marquis Software Solutions managed for the bank and other clients.

According to regulatory filings, approximately 51,000 individuals in the U.S. were affected, with 44,259 of those in Maine alone. Marquis has stated that it paid a ransom in hopes of containing the incident, but some stolen data has reportedly surfaced on criminal marketplaces.

Marquis and Norway Savings Bank reported the breach to the Maine Attorney's General office on Nov. 21, 2025, and began notifying affected individuals by mail.

The personal information exposed in this breach includes:

  • Names
  • Addresses
  • Dates of birth
  • Social Security and Tax ID numbers
  • Financial account information
