What Happened?
Between March 21, 2025, and April 6, 2025, Nelson University experienced a ransomware attack by the group Qilin.
The attackers claimed to have obtained sensitive data and threatened to publish it on the dark web. On April 16, 2025, the breach was posted on the Tor network, increasing the risk that personal information could be misused.
Information Exposed:
- Names
- Social Security numbers
- Addresses
- Dates of birth
The data breach was disclosed to the California and Massachusetts attorneys general starting on June 15, 2026. Nelson University notified affected individuals and set up a response line to answer questions about the incident.
The incident impacted 37,313 total individuals.
