IDScan.net, a New Orleans-based identity verification company, disclosed a data breach after detecting unauthorized access to its systems on or around Sept. 1, 2026.
The breach was reported to the South Carolina Attorney General. IDScan.net discovered the incident on or around Sept. 1, 2026, and began notifying consumers on Sept. 4, 2026. The company also posted a notice about the incident on its website.
The breach involved unauthorized access to customer information stored on IDScan.net's cloud platform. The company received information indicating that certain data may have been accessed without authorization.
Its investigation determined that an unauthorized third party may have accessed or copied certain customer information stored within accounts on the IDScan.net cloud.
Approximately 10 days after the company said it first detected the unauthorized access, dark web intelligence reporting linked the breach to a cybercriminal marketplace called Nexus. On Sept. 11, 2026, the marketplace surfaced on the open web, which is accessible through standard web browsers, and was offering access to a large collection of identity documents allegedly connected to IDScan.net.
The Nexus marketplace reportedly claimed to hold records on more than 170 million individuals from the United States and Canada.
The types of personally identifiable information confirmed as exposed in the breach included full names and driver's license or other government-issued identification numbers.
IDScan.net is notifying potentially affected individuals and providing access to free credit monitoring and identity protection services. The company's notification encouraged individuals to remain vigilant against incidents of identity theft and fraud by reviewing their credit reports and account statements for any suspicious activity or errors.
Affected individuals who have questions about the incident or who would like to enroll in the free credit monitoring and identity protection services can call 1-833-516-2980, Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. ET, excluding holidays. Individuals may also contact the company by writing to 8814 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Suite 3-124, Metairie, LA 70003.
