Greater Pittsburgh Orthopaedic Associates, also known as GPOA, is a longstanding medical practice in the Pittsburgh area. The group employs 15 orthopedic specialists and operates six office locations throughout the Pittsburgh metro region, including Shadyside, South Side, Moon Township, Monroeville, Cranberry Township, Brackenridge and Sewickley, Pa.

GPOA provides a wide range of orthopedic services, including care for the spine, shoulder, hip, knee, hand and upper extremities. The practice also offers sports medicine, joint replacement, revision surgery, foot and ankle care and orthobiologics.

What Happened?

On Aug. 10, 2025, Greater Pittsburgh Orthopedic Associates detected unauthorized access to its computer network. The incident was later revealed to be a ransomware attack claimed by the group RansomHouse, which posted about the breach on the dark web on Aug. 20, 2025.

An investigation found that sensitive information belonging to patients may have been compromised.

Information Exposed:

  • Names
  • Mailing addresses
  • Social Security numbers
  • Provider names
  • Medical records

GPOA notified affected individuals by written notice on Feb. 5, 2026. Starting on Feb. 19, 2026, the breach was reported to the atotrneys general offices of Maine, Massachusetts, and Vermont.

In total, 56,954 individuals in the United States were impacted, including three in Maine and nine in Massachusetts.
