About Gaylord Specialty Healthcare

Gaylord Specialty Healthcare is a nonprofit health system based in Wallingford, Connecticut. The organization is focused on rehabilitation and provides both inpatient and outpatient care to individuals recovering from illness or injury.

Founded in 1902, Gaylord Specialty Healthcare includes Gaylord Hospital, a long-term acute care hospital, as well as outpatient and physical therapy services. The company employs approximately 380 people, according to LinkedIn.

What Happened?

In December 2024, Gaylord Specialty Healthcare experienced a cybersecurity incident that disrupted network connectivity. The incident was later identified as a ransomware attack, with the SAFEPAY group claiming responsibility and alleging they obtained 160 GB of data, which was posted on the dark web via the Tor network.

After an extensive forensic investigation, Gaylord determined on Aug. 25, 2025, that personal data may have been accessed without authorization between Dec. 16 and Dec. 19, 2024. The breach was disclosed to the Maine Attorney General’s office and the Massachusetts Attorney General on Sept. 24, 2025. Written notices were sent to affected consumers on the same day.

Your Rights and Next Steps

If you received a notification from Gaylord Specialty Healthcare about this data breach, it is important to understand your rights and the steps you can take to protect yourself.

First, affected individuals are being offered complimentary credit monitoring and identity theft protection services through Cyberscout, a TransUnion company. To take advantage of these services, follow the instructions provided in the notification letter and enroll within ninety days.

Next, you should:

  • Obtain and review your credit reports from all three major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion) for any suspicious activity or unfamiliar accounts
  • Consider placing a free one-year fraud alert on your credit files, which will make it harder for someone to open new credit in your name
  • Place a security freeze on your credit report, which restricts access to your credit file and can help prevent new accounts from being opened without your consent
  • Stay vigilant by monitoring your financial statements and insurance “explanation of benefits” for unusual activity
  • Report any suspected identity theft to law enforcement and the Federal Trade Commission

Gaylord Specialty Healthcare has also provided resources for additional support, including contact information for state attorney general offices and the FTC. Even if your medical information was not misused, it is wise to review your insurance and medical records for any inaccuracies.
