On Dec. 30, 2025, Sentinel Security Life Insurance Co. (SSL), Atlantic Coast Life Insurance Company (ACL) and their current and former affiliates reported a significant data breach affecting at least 57,253 people across the United States.

The breach was first discovered on April 15, 2025, when the companies detected suspicious activity within their network. A subsequent investigation revealed that an unauthorized actor had accessed certain computer systems between April 7 and April 15, 2025, and potentially acquired files stored on those systems.

The companies completed a review of the compromised files by Dec. 17, 2025, confirming that sensitive information had been exposed.

The types of information involved in this breach are extensive and include both personally identifiable information (PII) and protected health information (PHI) including names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, financial account information, health insurance information, individual taxpayer identification numbers and medical information.

The breach is considered severe due to the sensitivity of the data involved and the potential for identity theft or fraud.

The data security incident was disclosed to the Attorney Generals' offices in California, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Oregon and Texas starting on Dec. 30, 2025.

Notice of Data Event pages were posted on both companies' websites: SSL Notice of Data Event and ACL Notice of Data Event.

SSL and ACL's response

After discovering the breach, the companies and their affiliates immediately took steps to secure their systems and launched a thorough investigation with the help of cybersecurity professionals. They isolated affected systems, reviewed the contents of compromised files and began notifying potentially impacted individuals.

As part of their response, the companies are offering twenty-four months of complimentary credit monitoring and identity restoration services through IDX to those affected.

If you receive notification from SSL, ACL or an affiliated company about this breach, you may want to:

  • Sign up for the free IDX identity theft protection services, offered by the companies.
  • Monitor your credit reports and financial accounts for any unusual activity.
  • Be alert for phishing emails or phone calls that may use your exposed information.
  • Consider placing a fraud alert or credit freeze with major credit bureaus.

For affected individuals with questions, the companies have set up a call center at 844-419-5502, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET.
