Doctors’ Memorial Hospital has experienced a major data breach involving Nationwide Recovery Services, a vendor that provides debt collection services for the hospital. The cyberattack took place on NRS systems in July 2024. An investigation determined a cybercriminal copied certain Nationwide Recovery files and folders between July 5, 2024 and July 11, 2024.

Nationwide Recovery Services disclosed the data breach to Doctors' Memorial Hospital on Feb. 7, 2025. NRS refused to handle the notification process and finally on May 27, 2025, DMH was provided a list of affected individuals.

The data breach affected both personally identifiable information (PII) and potentially protected health information (PHI). Compromised information includes names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, financial account information and medical information.

Doctors' Memorial Hospital disclosed the data breach to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on July 25, 2025 and published a data incident notice on its website the same day.

Doctors’ Memorial Hospital's response

In addition to required state and federal disclosures, Doctors' Memorial Hospital will notify affected patients by mail. DMH has set up a toll-free number for questions at 1-800-298-2295 between 9:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. EST, Monday through Friday.

If you receive a data breach notice from Doctors' Memorial Hospital, you may want to:

  • Sign up free credit monitoring services, if offered.
  • Monitor your credit reports and financial accounts for any unusual activity.
  • Be alert for phishing emails or phone calls that may use your exposed information.
  • Consider placing a fraud alert or credit freeze with major credit bureaus.

For more information about the hospital, visit the Doctors’ Memorial Hospital website.

Protect Your Data

A breach notice means your personal details could be circulating far beyond the organization involved. One practical step is continuous monitoring: services such as Identity Defender (included with an ExpressVPN subscription) can automatically check dark-web markets, flag new credit-file activity, and request removal of your information from data-broker sites.

This kind of “early-warning system” can’t undo a breach, but it can help you spot misuse quickly and limit further exposure. ExpressVPN is offering 61% off, risk-free for 30 days, with ID Theft Insurance included and no extra cost for those who sign up for one or two years.
