American Consumer Credit Counseling, Inc. (“ACCC”) recently experienced a data breach that exposed sensitive consumer information. On Jan. 29, 2025, a cybercriminal gained access to ACCC’s computer systems and acquired copies of certain files.

An investigation was launched and ACCC determined on June 27, 2025, that the compromised files contained personal information for a number of individuals. Exposed information full names, financial account numbers and payment card numbers.

The data breach was disclosed to the California, Maine and Massachusetts, Texas, and Washington State Attorney Generals' offices on July 15, 2025, reporting 1,579 Washington residents, 762 Texans, 488 Massachusetts residents and 94 Maine residents affected. The total number impacted nationwide has not yet been released.

American Consumer Credit Counseling's response

In addition to required state disclosures, American Consumer Credit Counseling began notifying affected individuals by mail on July 15, 2025. ACCC has also set up a line to answer consumer questions at 833-367-5721, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern.

If you believe your personal and financial information may have been compromised in this breach:

  • Carefully review any notice or communication you receive from American Consumer Credit Counseling.
  • Monitor financial accounts and credit reports for signs of identity theft.
  • Consider placing fraud alerts or credit freezes with the major credit bureaus.
  • Be cautious of unsolicited emails or phone calls requesting personal information.

For more information about ACCC’s services and credentials, visit the official ACCC website.

Protect Your Data

A breach notice means your personal details could be circulating far beyond the organization involved. One practical step is continuous monitoring: services such as Identity Defender (included with an ExpressVPN subscription) can automatically check dark-web markets, flag new credit-file activity, and request removal of your information from data-broker sites.

This kind of “early-warning system” can’t undo a breach, but it can help you spot misuse quickly and limit further exposure. ExpressVPN is offering 61% off, risk-free for 30 days, with ID Theft Insurance included and no extra cost for those who sign up for one or two years.
