On Dec. 1, 2025, Abri Credit Union discovered that it had experienced a major data breach affecting the personal information of its members. According to a disclosure filed with the Massachusetts Attorney General, the breach resulted from unauthorized access to Abri’s network between May 3 and May 4, 2024. During this brief but impactful window, an unauthorized actor accessed and potentially acquired sensitive member data.

The breach exposed a range of personally identifiable information (PII), including full names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, credit and debit card numbers, and financial account information. There is no indication that protected health information (PHI) was involved. The Massachusetts disclosure reports that 463 individuals in the state were affected, with the total number of impacted members likely higher nationwide.

The severity of this breach is considerable, as the compromised data can be used for identity theft, financial fraud and other malicious activities. The exact method by which the attacker gained access to Abri’s network has not been publicly detailed, but the incident prompted a comprehensive forensic investigation with external cybersecurity professionals. The breach was not detected until several months after the unauthorized access occurred, increasing the risk of misuse of the exposed information.

Abri Credit Union's response

To support those impacted, Abri is offering a complimentary membership to Experian IdentityWorks, which provides credit monitoring and identity theft protection services. Affected individuals can enroll in this program at no cost, and it will not impact their credit scores. The service includes daily credit report monitoring, identity restoration support, and up to $1 million in identity theft insurance.

Abri also recommends that affected members take the following steps:

  • Place a fraud alert on their credit files with the major credit bureaus
  • Consider placing a security freeze on their credit reports to prevent unauthorized access
  • Regularly review financial account statements and credit reports for suspicious activity
  • Obtain a free credit report annually through www.annualcreditreport.com

If individuals notice any fraudulent activity, they are encouraged to file a police report and contact the Federal Trade Commission for further guidance. The company has set up a dedicated toll-free response line at 855-720-2247 for those seeking more information or assistance.
