Cooper Aerobics Data Breach: Know Your Rights

What Happened?

On February 3, 2023, Cooper Aerobics Enterprises, Inc., which includes Cooper Clinic, P.A., Cooper Medical Imaging, LLP, and other associated entities, experienced a significant cybersecurity incident. The breach was identified when unauthorized access to the company's network was detected. Immediate steps were taken to contain the threat, and a comprehensive investigation was launched with the assistance of external cybersecurity professionals.

By March 19, 2023, it was determined that sensitive data might have been accessed or removed from the system. A meticulous manual review of all data on the impacted servers was conducted, and by December 8, 2023, it was confirmed that personal information stored on these servers was potentially compromised. This information included names, addresses, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, government-issued ID numbers, financial information, medical information, health insurance information, and dates of birth.

What Information Was Involved?

The unauthorized access potentially exposed a variety of personal information critical to the identity and financial security of the individuals affected. This includes:

  • Names and Addresses: Essential for contact but also used frequently as verification for identity.
  • Social Security Numbers and Driver’s License Numbers: Highly sensitive data that can be used for committing identity theft.
  • Financial Information: Such as account numbers and credit or debit card details, which could be used for financial fraud.
  • Medical and Health Insurance Information: Which could lead to medical identity theft or unauthorized access to one's medical services.
  • Dates of Birth: Often used as a secondary form of ID verification and can be used in conjunction with other data to steal identity.

Immediate Actions and Recommendations

Cooper Aerobics has taken measures to address and mitigate the effects of this breach. They have engaged with cybersecurity experts to secure their systems and prevent future incidents. For those potentially affected, the following steps are highly recommended:

  1. Monitor Your Accounts: Keep an eye on your financial statements and health insurance claims for any unauthorized activity.
  2. Credit Reports and Alerts: Consider placing a fraud alert and obtaining your free credit reports via AnnualCreditReport.com. This can help you monitor changes in your credit file.
  3. Security Freeze: You might want to place a security freeze on your credit reports, which will prevent creditors from accessing your credit report entirely, thereby blocking new credit applications.
  4. Identity Theft Protection Services: Cooper Aerobics is offering complimentary identity theft protection services through Identity Force, a TransUnion company. This service includes credit monitoring and proactive fraud assistance.
