Virginia Mason Health $6.75M Privacy Settlement

Update: The final approval hearing date changed from May 23, 2025, to Sept. 19, 2025. Also, class members who received an email requesting additional information to verify that they were a patient portal user must submit additional information by Aug. 15, 2025. 

Washington residents who were patients of Virginia Mason Medical Center or health system and accessed the MyVirginiaMason patient portal or Virginia Mason's public website between Oct. 10, 2015, and May 18, 2023, may qualify to claim up to $90 from a class action settlement.

Virginia Mason agreed to pay $6.75 million to settle a class action lawsuit alleging unauthorized sharing of patient data with third parties like Facebook and Google.

Who is eligible for a settlement payout?

Class members must meet the following criteria:

• They are a resident of Washington state and are or were a patient of Virginia Mason Medical Center or health system or any of their affiliates between Oct. 10, 2015, and May 18, 2023
• They logged into the MyVirginiaMason patient portal or used Virginia Mason’s public website to view or search for medical-related information

How much will my settlement payment be?

Class members can submit a claim for one or both of the following payments:

• MyVirginiaMason patient portal users: Class members who logged into the MyVirginiaMason patient portal may submit a claim for a payment of $90.
• Virginia Mason public website users: Class members who used Virginia Mason’s public website may submit a claim for a payment of $45.
• The settlement also includes nonmonetary benefits, which class members can read about in FAQ No. 7 on the settlement website.

Both cash payment amounts are subject to pro rata adjustment depending on the number of valid claims submitted.

What info do I need to provide with my claim?

Claimants must provide their settlement claim ID from the official court-ordered notice to submit a claim.

How to claim a payout

Class members can file a claim online or download the PDF claim form and print, complete and mail it to the settlement administrator. The claim deadline is April 28, 2025.

$6.75 million settlement fund breakdown

The settlement fund of $6,750,000 will include:

• Payments to approved claimants
• Settlement notice and administration costs

Attorneys' fees and expenses of up to $5,378,601 and the $10,000 service award for the class representative will be paid separately from the settlement fund.

When is the Virginia Mason settlement payout date?

If the settlement is approved by the court with no appeals, payments will be issued to approved claimants approximately 60 days later.

Why is there a class action settlement?

The class action lawsuit alleged Virginia Mason Health installed computer code on its website and patient portal that allowed patient and medical information to be disclosed to third parties, including Facebook and Google.

Virginia Mason Health denies wrongdoing but agreed to settle to resolve these claims and avoid costly litigation.
