Individuals who used their personal credit card, debit card, or EBT card at any Sprouts grocery store in the United States between August 16, 2020, and April 15, 2023, may qualify to submit a claim for a cash payment from a class action settlement.
Sprouts Farmers Market Inc. and SFM LLC have agreed to pay $5 million to settle a class action lawsuit. The class action lawsuit alleges that Sprouts violated the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA) by printing more than the last five digits of customers’ credit or debit card numbers on receipts, including EBT cards.
Who can file a claim for a FACTA payout?
Class members must meet the following criteria:
- They used a personal credit card, debit card, or EBT card at any Sprouts grocery store in the United States.
- If they used credit or debit card, the transaction occurred between August 16, 2020, and October 31, 2022.
- If they used an EBT card, the transaction occurred between March 15, 2021, and April 15, 2023.
- They received an electronically printed receipt at the point of sale that displayed more than the last five digits of the card number.
The class is divided into two groups based on how eligibility is determined:
- Group 1: Individuals who received a written notice by email containing a Notice Number beginning with the letter P. Sprouts’ records indicate these individuals had a qualifying transaction.
- Group 2: Individuals who did not receive such a notice but believe they qualify based on their transaction history and can provide the required documentation.
Each class member can only submit one claim, regardless of the number of qualifying transactions.
How much will the Sprouts settlement payment be?
Pro rata cash payment: Class members can submit to receive a pro rata cash payment from the net settlement fund. Final payment amount will be determined by the total number of claims filed.
Payment calculation example
- If the net settlement fund is $2,577,333.33 and there are 10,000 valid claims: $2,577,333.33 ÷ 10,000 = $257.73 per claimant
- If the net settlement fund is $2,577,333.33 and there are 20,000 valid claims: $2,577,333.33 ÷ 20,000 = $128.87 per claimant

Why did this class action settlement happen?
The class action lawsuit alleged that Sprouts violated the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act by printing more than the last five digits of customers’ card numbers on receipts, which could increase the risk of identity theft. Sprouts denied the allegations but agreed to settle to avoid the uncertainty and cost of further litigation and a possible trial.
The settlement also requires Sprouts to implement a written company policy to ensure that no more than the last five digits of a card number or the expiration date are printed on customer receipts.
