
Individuals who received a notice stating he Medusind data incident may have impacted their personal and protected health information may qualify to submit a claim for up to $5,000 from a class action settlement.
Medusind Inc., a medical and dental billing and software company, agreed to pay $5 million to resolve a class action lawsuit stemming from a data breach that occurred on or about Dec. 29, 2023. The breach resulted in unauthorized access to sensitive personal and health information, including names, addresses, emails, phone numbers, insurance and billing data, payment details, medical records and government identification numbers.
Who is eligible for a data breach payout?
- Class members are individuals who reside in the United States and received a notice indicating the Medusind data incident may have affected their private information.
 - Class members who lived in California on Dec. 29, 2023, qualify to claim an additional payment.
 
How much is the class action settlement payment?
The settlement provides several options for compensation, depending on the claimant’s circumstances and location.
- Cash Payment A – Documented losses: Class members can submit a claim to receive up to $5,000 for documented losses related to the data incident. This includes unreimbursed losses from fraud or identity theft, costs to freeze or unfreeze credit, and other related out-of-pocket expenses.
 - Cash Payment B – Alternate cash: Class members who do not submit a documented losses claim can claim an alternate cash payment estimated to be $100. The settlement administrator will determine the final payment amount by the number of valid claims.
 - California statutory award: In addition to Cash Payment A or Cash Payment B, claimants who resided in California on Dec. 29, 2023, can submit to receive an additional payment estimated at $100. The settlement administrator will determine the final payment amount by the number of valid California claims submitted.
 - Credit monitoring: All class members can choose to receive two years of credit monitoring services.
 
How to claim a data breach class action rebate
To receive a settlement payment, class members must submit a claim form by Dec. 29, 2025. They can file a claim online or download, print, complete and mail the PDF claim form to the settlement administrator.

Required proof and claim information
- All class members must provide the unique ID from their settlement notice. Online claimants must also provide the PIN from the same notice.
 - Documented loss claims require documentation showing losses or expenses related to the data incident. Acceptable documents include receipts, account statements or correspondence.

$5 million data breach settlement fund
The $5,000,000 settlement fund will include:
- Settlement administration costs: To be determined
 - Attorneys’ fees: Up to $1,666,667
 - Attorneys’ expenses: To be presented to the court for approval at a later date
 - Credit monitoring services: Cost determined by the number of claims filed
 - Payments to class members: Remaining settlement funds

When is the Medusind data breach settlement payout date?
The settlement administrator will issue payments to approved claimants approximately 75 days after the court grants final approval of the settlement.
Why is there a class action settlement?
The class action lawsuit alleged Medusind Inc. failed to adequately protect private and health information, resulting in a data breach on or about Dec. 29, 2023. The plaintiffs claimed this breach led to unauthorized access to sensitive data.
Medusind denied any wrongdoing but agreed to settle to avoid the expense and uncertainty of ongoing litigation.
