Consumers who entered into the June 2021 Dogecoin sweepstakes that Coinbase sponsored and bought, sold or traded at least $100 in Dogecoin on Coinbase between June 3 and June 10, 2021, may qualify to receive a cash payment ranging from approximately $1-$17 from a class action settlement.

Coinbase Inc. agreed to pay $2,250,000 to settle a class action lawsuit alleging it failed to adequately disclose the free entry option for a Dogecoin sweepstakes held in June 2021, causing some users to unnecessarily pay to enter the sweepstakes. The lawsuit claimed Coinbase and Marden-Kane Inc. violated California consumer protection laws, including the False Advertising Law and the Unfair Competition Law.

Who are the class members?

Class members must meet all of the following criteria:

  • They opted into the June 2021 Dogecoin sweepstakes that Coinbase sponsored.
  • They bought, sold or traded Dogecoin on the Coinbase website or mobile app for a total of $100 or more (USD) between June 3, 2021, and June 10, 2021.

No action needed to receive payment

Class members do not need to file a claim to receive an payment. If the court approves the settlement and it becomes final, payments will be made automatically.

  • Class members who have an open Coinbase account will receive the payment deposited directly into their account.
  • Class members who have a closed or inactive Coinbase account will receive a check mailed to their last known address on file with Coinbase as of June 17, 2025.

$2.25 million settlement fund breakdown

The $2,250,000 settlement fund covers:

  • Settlement administration costs: Approximately $96,000
  • Attorneys' fees: Up to $750,000
  • Attorneys' expenses: Up to $75,000
  • Service awards to class representatives: Up to $7,000 each to four plaintiffs ($28,000 total)
  • Payments to eligible class members: Remaining net settlement fund (estimated at $1,315,000 after deductions)

  • Opt-out deadline: Oct. 1, 2025
  • Final approval hearing: Nov. 10, 2025

When is the Dogecoin sweepstakes settlement payout date?

Payments will be distributed approximately 60 days after the court grants final approval and any appeals are resolved.

The class action lawsuit alleged Coinbase and Marden-Kane failed to properly disclose the free entry method for the June 2021 Dogecoin sweepstakes, which allegedly caused some users to pay unnecessarily for entry.
