Why did this class action settlement happen?

The class action lawsuit alleged Demandbase Inc. and InsideView Technologies Inc. used individuals’ names, contact information, job titles, places of work, education histories and other personal information without consent in their marketing database to encourage purchases of subscriptions. The plaintiffs claimed this violated right-of-publicity laws in several states.

The companies denied any wrongdoing but agreed to settle to avoid the risks and costs of ongoing litigation. The settlement also requires changes to how they display teaser profiles on the InsideView website.
