What Happened?
On Jan. 6, 2026, Sun Communities discovered suspicious activity involving two employee user accounts.
Sun Communities activated its incident response procedures, shut down affected systems, restricted compromised user access and engaged third-party forensic specialists. The investigation concluded Jan. 26, 2026, confirming that the incident resulted in unauthorized access, viewing or removal of certain personal information and company data.
The investigation revealed that, on Dec. 25, 2025, and Jan. 5, 2026, an unknown third party used a social engineering scheme to pose as IT support and convinced two Sun employees to complete a fraudulent multi-factor authentication setup. This allowed the unauthorized party to access certain Sun systems and exfiltrate data based on the limited access rights of those accounts.
