What happened?
In July 2025, SmartRent discovered that a data breach had occurred involving one of its vendors, Semple Marchal and Cooper LLP (SMC), an accounting firm responsible for auditing SmartRent’s 401k retirement savings plan. SMC notified SmartRent on July 8, 2025, of a cybersecurity incident that had been discovered on May 10, 2025.
The data breach itself took place in February 2025, when unauthorized access was gained to SMC’s internal share drive through a phishing campaign and affected current and former employees from 2019 to 2024. The breach affected both employees who participated in the 401k plan and those who did not.
