What Happened?
On Jan. 14, 2026, a skilled individual used social engineering tactics to gain unauthorized access to a Choice Hotels application containing records related to franchisees and franchise applicants.
This breach occurred even though the application required multifactor authentication (MFA). The company detected the unauthorized access and shut it down in less than an hour.
After a thorough investigation, Choice Hotels determined on Jan. 26, 2026, that sensitive information had been accessed.
The breach impacted residents in several states, including at least 66 people in Maine and 67 in New Hampshire.
On Feb. 19, 2026, Choice Hotels began mailing notification letters to those affected.
