
TruView BSI LLC, a background screening and investigations company based in Melville, New York, disclosed a data breach in which a cybercriminal may have accessed personal information stored in the company's systems.
TruView discovered the breach on March 4, 2026, and is notifying affected consumers by written notice beginning April 8, 2026.
The breach was reported to the Maine Attorney General, with 15 Maine residents identified as affected by the incident. The total number of affected individuals is currently undisclosed.
A cybercriminal may have accessed personal information within TruView's environment between July 18, 2024, and Aug. 15, 2024. The unauthorized access spanned approximately four weeks during the summer of 2024.
The breach was not confirmed until early 2026, more than 19 months after the unauthorized access first occurred.
After becoming aware of the unauthorized activity, TruView brought in third-party cybersecurity specialists to conduct a forensic investigation. The goal of this investigation was to determine the full scope and nature of the incident. The company further conducted a comprehensive review of the impacted files to identify what information was affected and which individuals were involved.
The investigation found that personally identifiable information had been potentially exposed. The types of information at risk included names, Social Security numbers and driver's license numbers.
TruView is providing affected individuals with access to single bureau credit monitoring, credit report and credit score services at no charge for 12 months. These services are being provided through CyberScout, a TransUnion company that specializes in fraud assistance and remediation services.
Affected individuals can enroll by visiting CyberScout's activation page and entering the unique code included in their notification letter. Enrollment must be completed within 90 days of the date of the letter.
TruView is additionally providing affected individuals with proactive fraud assistance to help answer questions they may have. The company is also sharing guidance on how to place fraud alerts and credit freezes on credit files, how to obtain free credit reports and how to report attempted or actual identity theft to the Federal Trade Commission and state attorneys general.
