The Service Employees International Union Local 1 Health and Welfare and Trust Funds (SEIU Funds), a major organization representing property service workers across several Midwest cities, recently experienced a data breach affecting sensitive member information.

On March 27, 2025, SEIU Funds became aware of suspicious activity involving certain email accounts. An investigation revealed that an unauthorized party had accessed one email account on two separate days: March 4 and March 27, 2025.

The breach prompted an extensive review to determine what information was potentially exposed and which individuals were affected. While the investigation is ongoing, it has been determined that the exposed data may include a combination of personally identifiable information such as names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers and financial information.

The organization has not yet disclosed the total number of individuals impacted, but the nature of the data involved is considered highly sensitive.

The company has posted a notification of the incident on its website.

SEIU Funds's response

Upon discovering the incident, SEIU Funds secured its email environment and launched a thorough investigation to assess the scope and impact of the breach. The organization has implemented additional cybersecurity measures and reviewed its existing security policies to strengthen defenses against similar incidents in the future.

SEIU Funds is in the process of notifying affected individuals by mail, providing them with details about the incident and resources for protecting their information. The union encourages all potentially impacted individuals to remain vigilant by reviewing account statements, monitoring free credit reports and watching for suspicious activity or errors.

Recommended actions for those potentially affected include:

  • Reviewing account statements and explanation of benefits for suspicious activity
  • Ordering free annual credit reports from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion at www.annualcreditreport.com or by calling 1-877-322-8228
  • Considering placing a fraud alert or credit freeze with the major credit bureaus
  • Reporting any suspected identity theft to law enforcement and the relevant state attorney general

SEIU Funds will also be establishing a toll-free call center for questions once notification letters are mailed. For more information and to contact the organization, individuals can use the contact form on the company's website.
