The popular Quittr app, which helps users quit pornography addiction, recently suffered a data breach that exposed highly sensitive and personal user information.
The incident was reported by 404 Media, which detailed how the breach exposed intimate data for a large portion of Quittr’s user base. The app, which boasts more than 350,000 downloads and up to 1.5 million users, stores deeply personal information as part of its mission to support users in overcoming compulsive adult content use.
The breach impacted hundreds of thousands of users, revealing private details such as users’ ages, the frequency of their masturbation, and their emotional responses to viewing pornography. This information was accessible due to a security lapse in the app’s infrastructure.
The breach is especially severe considering the stigma and privacy concerns surrounding the app’s user community.
The breach occurred due to a misconfiguration in the app’s backend, which left a database accessible without proper authentication. As a result, anyone with knowledge of the database’s location could access sensitive user responses and behavioral data.
At this time, Quittr has not publicly disclosed the full extent of the breach on its website, but the incident has been widely covered in the media.
Given the nature of the exposed data, those who used Quittr should be aware of the potential for targeted phishing or social engineering attempts.
