Murata Electronics North America Inc., a subsidiary of Japanese electronic components manufacturer Murata Manufacturing Co. Ltd., disclosed a data breach that involved nearly a year of unauthorized access to its IT environment. The company is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, and serves as the regional headquarters for Murata's operations across North and South America.
An unauthorized third party gained access to Murata's IT environment over a period beginning in March 2025 and lasting nearly 12 months. Upon learning of the intrusion, the company blocked external access to its network.
Murata then engaged a specialized third-party cybersecurity firm to secure the environment and conduct a comprehensive forensic investigation. The investigation ran from March 1 through April 6, 2026.
The types of personal information that may have been exposed included Social Security numbers, driver's licenses, financial account information and medical records.
The breach was disclosed to the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation.
Murata is offering affected individuals 24 months of free identity monitoring services through Kroll, a global risk mitigation firm. The services include triple bureau credit monitoring, $1 million identity fraud loss reimbursement, fraud consultation and identity theft restoration.
The credit monitoring service sends alerts when changes appear on an individual's credit data at any of the three national credit bureaus, such as when a new line of credit is applied for in their name.
Affected individuals can activate their monitoring services by visiting Kroll's enrollment page and entering the membership ID included in their notification letter.
Murata has also set up a dedicated toll-free call center at 844-403-4625, available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Central Time, to answer questions about the breach. Individuals may also reach the company through its online contact form.
