On Aug. 19, 2025, Motility Software Solutions, a provider of dealer management software for specialty vehicle dealerships, identified suspicious activity on its network. The company quickly took the impacted server offline to contain the incident and began an investigation with the help of cybersecurity experts.
According to Motility, the breach resulted in unauthorized access to the personally identifiable information (PII) of approximately 760,000 consumers in the United States.
The exposed information includes names, birthdates, driver’s license numbers and Social Security numbers.
The company has stated that the breach was limited to Motility’s network and did not impact the systems or network of its parent company, Reynolds and Reynolds. The exact method of compromise has not been disclosed, but the scale of the breach and the sensitivity of the data involved make it a significant event for those affected.
After discovering the breach, Motility isolated the affected server and began remediation activities. The company engaged external cybersecurity experts and notified law enforcement to assist in the investigation. Motility has implemented additional security measures, including new tools and redundant third-party monitoring for suspicious activity, and is actively reviewing further cybersecurity practices.
To support those affected, Motility is notifying impacted consumers and offering credit monitoring services. Anyone who receives a notification from Motility should take advantage of these services and monitor their credit reports for any unusual activity.
It is also recommended to be vigilant against potential phishing attempts or fraudulent communications that may use the exposed information. Consumers should consider placing a fraud alert or credit freeze with major credit bureaus if they believe their information has been misused.
A breach notice means your personal details could be circulating far beyond the organization involved. One practical step is continuous monitoring: services such as Identity Defender (included with an ExpressVPN subscription) can automatically check dark-web markets, flag new credit-file activity, and request removal of your information from data-broker sites.
This kind of “early-warning system” can’t undo a breach, but it can help you spot misuse quickly and limit further exposure. ExpressVPN is offering 61% off, risk-free for 30 days, with ID Theft Insurance included and no extra cost for those who sign up for one or two years.
