LaBonne's Markets, a family-owned Connecticut grocery chain operated by Hy LaBonne & Sons Inc and headquartered in Watertown, disclosed a data breach that affected consumers in multiple states.

On Oct. 26, 2025, the group posted a claimed on the Tor network it had obtained data from LaBonne's Markets. The group intended to publish the stolen information within three days.

More than six months passed between the PLAY group's dark web posting in October 2025 and the company's regulatory disclosures in May 2026.

The regulatory letter did not specify the exact dates the breach began, ended or was discovered, leaving the full timeline of the incident unclear. It also did not describe how the attackers gained access to the company's systems.

The type of personal information exposed in this breach included names and Social Security numbers.

So far, 67 Massachusetts residents and 10 Vermont residents were affected.

LaBonne's Markets' response to the breach

The company is offering affected individuals 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring and identity theft protection services through Experian IdentityWorks. The membership includes an Experian credit report at signup, daily credit reports for online members, active credit monitoring of the Experian credit file for indicators of fraud, identity restoration support from dedicated specialists and $1 million in identity theft insurance.

The membership also includes Experian IdentityWorks ExtendCARE, which provides the same level of identity restoration support even after the membership period has expired.

Affected individuals can activate their membership by visiting the Experian IdentityWorks enrollment page and entering the unique activation code included in their notification letter. The enrollment deadline is July 31, 2026.

Steps to take if your information was exposed

  • Place a credit freeze or fraud alert with all three credit bureaus. Contact Equifax at 888-298-0045, Experian at 1-888-397-3742 and TransUnion at 1-800-916-8800 to help prevent unauthorized accounts from being opened in your name.
  • Request free copies of your credit reports. Annual reports from all three bureaus are available at AnnualCreditReport.com and should be reviewed for any accounts or inquiries that look unfamiliar.
  • File a report with the Federal Trade Commission if you suspect identity theft. The FTC offers resources and a complaint process at IdentityTheft.gov or by phone at 1-877-438-4338.
  • Be cautious of phishing attempts that reference this breach. Scammers may send emails, calls or texts posing as LaBonne's Markets to try to steal additional personal information.
  • Monitor financial account statements for unauthorized activity. Review bank and credit card statements regularly and report any suspicious transactions to the appropriate financial institution right away.
  • Consider filing a police report if you become a victim of identity theft. Under Massachusetts law, individuals have the right to file a police report and obtain a copy of it.
