First Rate Financial, an Alaska-based mortgage brokerage headquartered in Anchorage, disclosed a data breach that exposed sensitive personal and financial consumer information.

The incident was first disclosed with the Vermont Attorney General on May 6, 2026. At this time, the total number of individuals affected across the United States has not been publicly reported.

On Dec. 16, 2025, a ransomware group known as Lockbit 5.0 claimed on the Tor network to have obtained the company's data.

The types of consumer information confirmed to have been exposed in this breach included Social Security numbers, government identification numbers, financial account codes and credit or debit account information.

First Rate Financial's response to the breach

Consumers who have applied for a mortgage or other home loan through First Rate Financial and are concerned about whether their personal information was affected can contact the company by phone at 907-222-5500. The company is located at 3150 C St. Ste. 150, Anchorage, AK 99503.

Steps to take if your information was exposed

Because this breach involved highly sensitive personal and financial data, consumers who have shared information with First Rate Financial may want to take the following protective steps right away. These steps can help whether or not an individual has received a notification letter from the company.

  • Place a fraud alert or credit freeze with all three credit bureaus by contacting Equifax (1-800-525-6285), Experian (1-888-397-3742) and TransUnion (1-800-680-7289).
  • Request free copies of your credit reports at AnnualCreditReport.com and review them carefully for any accounts or inquiries you do not recognize.
  • Monitor bank and credit card statements closely for unauthorized charges or withdrawals, since financial account and credit or debit account data were involved in this breach.
  • Contact your bank or credit card company to discuss whether additional protections such as new account numbers or enhanced fraud monitoring may be appropriate for your situation.
  • Be cautious of phishing attempts that reference First Rate Financial or this data breach by name, as scammers often use real breach events to trick people into revealing more personal information.
  • Report any suspected identity theft to the Federal Trade Commission at IdentityTheft.gov if you notice signs that your Social Security number or government identification is being misused.
