
Between March 21, 2025 and April 23, 2025, Delta Dental of Virginia, the largest dental benefits provider in Virginia, experienced a data breach that exposed personally identifiable information of its members. According to the investigation, a cybercriminal gained access to personally identifiable information (PII) and protected health information (PHI) via email accounts and attachments.
The incident was first discovered on April 23, 2025, when the company detected suspicious activity associated with a single email account. As a result, a comprehensive review was conducted to determine the scope of the information that may have been accessed or acquired.
The compromised information may have included names, addresses, Social Security numbers, state or federal government-issued ID numbers and other protected health information. The cybersecurity incident has impacted at least 145,918 individuals, including 2,374 residents in Texas, 1,413 in South Carolina, 628 in Massachusetts, 222 in Maine and 169 in New Hampshire.
The exposure of PII and PHI puts individuals at risk of identity theft and medical fraud.
Delta Dental of Virginia disclosed the data breach to the California, Texas, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Vermont Attorney Generals' offices and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services starting on Nov. 21, 2025. The company also posted a data security notice on its website and is notifying impacted individuals by mail.
In response to the data breach, the Company investigated the incident and took steps to enhance security. In addition to required state and federal disclosures, Delta Dental of Virginia is offering complimentary identity monitoring services to consumers impacted by the data breach.
