Navy Federal Credit Union members who had a personal loan opened in their name between Jan. 1, 2023, and Jan. 31, 2025, may be eligible to submit a claim for a refund of all payments made on the loan plus an additional $250 from a class action settlement.
Navy Federal Credit Union agreed to settle a lawsuit alleging it failed to prevent unauthorized personal loans from being opened in members’ names and did not cancel those loans after fraudsters impersonating NFCU staff convinced members to transfer loan funds to unknown third parties. NFCU will cancel all qualifying fraudulent loans and issue requests to credit reporting agencies within 45 days of the final approval date. The settlement administrator will issue payments to claimants within 60 days of the final approval date.
Why did this settlement happen?
The class action lawsuit alleged Navy Federal Credit Union failed to prevent unauthorized individuals from opening personal loans in members’ names and did not cancel those loans after the fraudsters impersonated NFCU staff and convinced members to transfer loan funds to unknown third parties.
NFCU denies any wrongdoing but agreed to settle to avoid the risk and expense of continued litigation.
