Basketball fans who lived in the United States and had both an active Facebook account and an NBA Top Shot account at any time between June 15, 2020, and Jan. 30, 2025, may be eligible to claim a cash payment of approximately $36 to $122 from a class action settlement.

NBA Properties Inc. and Dapper Labs Inc. agreed to pay $7.05 million to resolve a class action lawsuit alleging they shared the personally identifiable information of NBA Top Shot account holders with Meta via the Meta tracking pixel on the NBA Top Shot website without obtaining proper consent. The plaintiffs claimed this conduct violated the Video Privacy Protection Act and California law.

Who is eligible for an NBA Top Shot payout?

Class members must meet the following criteria:

  • They resided in the United States at any time between June 15, 2020, and Jan. 30, 2025.
  • They had an NBA Top Shot account during the class period.
  • They had a Facebook account at the same time they had an NBA Top Shot account during the class period.

How much is the class action settlement payment?

Cash payment: Each eligible claimant will receive an equal pro rata cash payment estimated between $36 and $122. The settlement administrator will determine the final payment amount by the number of claims filed.

How to claim a class action rebate

To receive a settlement payment, class members must submit a claim form by the Dec. 16, 2025, deadline. They can file a claim online or print the PDF claim form to complete and mail to the settlement administrator.

Required proof and claim information

  • To submit an online claim, claimants must provide the unique ID and PIN from the settlement notice they received.
  • All claimants must provide their NBA Top Shot user name and email address.
  • All claimants must provide proof of their Facebook account by providing their Facebook profile URL or uploading a screenshot of their Facebook profile.

Payout options

Claimants can choose from the following payment methods:

  • Venmo
  • PayPal
  • Zelle
  • Paper check mailed to the address provided

$7.05 Million NBA Top Shot privacy settlement fund

The $7,050,000.00 settlement fund includes:

  • Settlement administration costs: To be determined
  • Attorneys' fees and expenses: Up to $2,350,000
  • Service awards to class representatives: Up to $10,000 each
  • Payments to approved claimants: Remaining settlement funds

Important dates

  • Deadline to opt out of the settlement: Nov. 17, 2025
  • Deadline to submit a claim form: Dec. 16, 2025
  • Final approval hearing: Dec. 19, 2025

When is the NBA Top Shot video privacy settlement payout date?

The settlement administrator will issue payments to class members with approved claims approximately 120 days after the court grants approval of the settlement.

Why did this class action settlement happen?

This class action lawsuit alleged NBA Properties Inc. and Dapper Labs Inc. violated the Video Privacy Protection Act and California law by sharing the personally identifiable information of NBA Top Shot account holders with Meta via the Meta tracking pixel on the NBA Top Shot website without obtaining proper consent. The companies deny these allegations but agreed to settle to avoid the uncertainty and expense of continued litigation and a possible trial.

As part of the settlement, the defendants will also suspend operation of the Meta tracking pixel on the NBA Top Shot website unless the law changes or they come into compliance.
